Roots was my first information visualization project. It was running on four plasma screens at the Goldman Sachs Training Center on a SGI Onyx supercomputer and was written in IRIS Performer scene graph in C++. The Oracle database stored 30 years worth of financial data.

Roots displayed 12 financial sectors as they changed their prices from 1970 to 1999.

Each cone represented an industry within a sector and each transparent bubble represented the price of the whole sector.

The size of the rectangles on the floor also represented the price of each sector.

Roots moved up and down according to market Beta.

Roots was both an information report and an experiment in 3D data visualization.
